PSYCHOANALYSTS  WORLDWIDE STAGE  EVENTS TO MARK CENTENARY OF INTERNATIONAL PSYCHOANALYTICAL ASSOCIATION (IPA) 

The IPA, founded by Sigmund Freud and other eminent psychoanalysts at the end of March 1910, is celebrating its centenary with a series of events across five continents. The IPA is the world’s primary accrediting and regulatory body for psychoanalysis. Its mission is to assure the continued vigour and development of psychoanalysis for the benefit of patients and the community in general.

The centennial celebrations – designed to reach out to all those interested in mental health issues – include two events taking place on 27 March to mark the exact month in which the IPA was founded:

Houston, Texas, USA  27 March 2010

A centerpiece of the celebrations will be Asia’s first-ever international conference on psychoanalysis, held in Beijing from 21 to 24 October 2010. The event, “Freud and Asia – Evolution and Change: Psychoanalysis in the Asian Context” is hosted by the China Mental Health Association in association with the IPA.

The concluding international celebration will take place at the IPA Mexico Congress in August 2011. It promises to be a brilliant Congress where core analytic concepts linking sexuality, dreams and the unconscious will be explored, while the glories of Mexican art, archaeology and hospitality will be enjoyed.

Further events to be arranged include meetings in Atlanta and San Francisco (USA),  Jerusalem (Israel), Brisbane and Perth (Australia), Auckland (New Zealand) as well as in Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru and Chile.

IPA President, Prof. Charles Hanly said “Psychoanalysis has contributed to the transformation of our social values and has been active in shaping the world we live in. It has changed our attitudes towards children and the family unit, towards sexuality, the body, the individual and mental health. The IPA centenary is not only about celebrating the many achievements of our association over the past century. It is  also an opportunity for renewed outreach activities to ensure that in the next one hundred years, psychoanalysis will continue to flourish and to serve our communities.”

ABOUT THE IPA

The IPA is the world’s primary accrediting and regulatory body for psychoanalysis. Its mission is to assure the continued vigour and development of psychoanalysis for the benefit of patients and the community in general.

The IPA works in partnership with 70 constituent organizations in 60 countries to support over 12,000 members. Its aims include creating new psychoanalytic groups, stimulating debate, conducting research, developing training policies and establishing links with other bodies (groups). It organizes a large biennial Congress which is open to all.

The IPA was founded in Nuremberg in March 1910 by Sigmund Freud, Ernst Jones, Karl Abraham, Max Eitingon and Sandor Ferenczi. Sigmund Freud believed that an international organization was essential to advance and safeguard his thinking and ideas.
