'Psychoanalysis, Meaning and Mind' Dr John McClean

On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Foundation of the International Psychoanalytical Association, the Australian Psychoanalytical Society presents a public lecture:

Dr. John McClean     Psychoanalysis, Meaning and Mind

 Chair:   Maria Teresa Hooke

Focus of the lecture: Freud’s discovery of psychic reality is at the heart of psychoanalysis. From a contemporary perspective we can see
this as Freud’s discovery of the unconscious processes by which the mind makes meaning of emotional experience. This lecture will briefly review Freud’s path of discovery, and then focus in more detail on the development of his insights in the work of Bion and Ferro. In particular it will discuss their observations of the non-symbolic functioning of the mind, and the role of containing and transforming in the development of symbolic functioning.

Dr. John McClean is Deputy President of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society, and a Training and Supervising analyst with the Sydney Institute for Psychoanalysis.  He is active in teaching and training, and has a particular interest in the relationships between psychoanalysis and literature and film.

Maria Teresa Hooke is immediate Past President of the Australian Psychoanalytical Society, and a Training and Supervising analyst with the Sydney Institute for Psychoanalysis.

This will be followed by discussion of the paper and general discussion about the Australian Psychoanalytical Society.
