The Australian Psychoanalytical Society (APAS) (ABN 63 218 214 356) is a component society of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA).
1. Collecting personal information about you ↓
We may collect personal information in a variety of situations, including when an individual:
- logs into or visits the APAS website (see also section 2 below);
- makes an enquiry or request relating APAS' activities or services;
- completes a form to register to receive newsletters or become a member of APAS; or
- otherwise submits personal information to APAS (e.g. in emails sent to APAS).
The type of information that APAS collects may include the following: name, date of birth, gender, address, email address, phone number, pages visited on our website, details of usage of our website, and any other personal information that you submit to APAS. If you contact APAS, APAS may also keep a record of that contact.
We will not seek to collect personal information about you from third parties in other circumstances unless it is impracticable or unreasonable for us to collect it directly, we are required or authorised by law or a court / tribunal order, or if we have your consent to do so. If we receive information about you from anyone else, we will take reasonable steps to ensure you are aware that we have collected personal information about you and the circumstances of the collection.
If we receive your personal information by mistake or do not require it for any business purpose, we will securely destroy it or ensure the personal information is de-identified if we are permitted by law and it is practicable to do so.
3. Purposes of use and disclosure of your personal information ↓
Personal information we collect may be held, used and disclosed for the following purposes:
- facilitating the provision of assistance or services you have requested,
- contacting you and providing customer service,
- developing and improving our services and activities;
- where we have your consent to do so, informing you about products, services and opportunities in the form of direct marketing by us;
- for internal and external administration purposes (e.g. auditing, IT administration); and
- as required or authorised by law or a court or tribunal order and to protect the rights, property or safety of APAS, its members or other persons;
- to protect our legal rights and obtain professional advice;
- to comply with industry standards and our policies; and
- any other purpose communicated to you at or around the time we collect your personal information.
If you do not provide us with your personal information when requested, this may mean we are not able to provide you with assistance or service you have requested, and we may not be able to properly respond to your enquiries.
4. Holding and protecting your personal information ↓
APAS holds personal information in a combination of computer storage facilities, paper-based files and other records, both at our own premises and with the assistance of service providers.
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information that we hold from misuse, interference and loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure.
5. Disclosing your personal information ↓
- our business partners, suppliers and service providers, and other third parties notified to you at or around the time we collect your personal information. This includes organisations such as logistics and mailing providers, and technology and support providers;
- our professional advisors, accountants, insurers, lawyers and auditors on a confidential basis;
- in certain circumstances, to third parties that require information for law enforcement purposes; and
- any other third parties notified to you at or around the time we collect your personal information.
APAS does not disclose information about you to advertisers. Instead, advertisers on APAS' website may give APAS advertisements and specify the kind of audience they wish to reach. In such circumstances, APAS then takes the advertisement and displays it to users who are considered likely to have an interest in the product or service.
6. Access to and accuracy of personal information ↓
You may request access to personal information that we hold about you. We will consider all requests to access personal information within a reasonable time in accordance with our internal policies and procedures. Unless there are reasons why we cannot provide you with access to your personal information (e.g. for legal reasons), our file of your information will be made available to you within a reasonable time after we receive your request.
You are responsible for ensuring that the personal information provided to us is accurate, complete and up-to-date at the time it is provided and must notify us of any changes to or errors in your personal information. To notify us of changes to or errors in personal information that we hold about you, please contact us and we will amend our records as appropriate.

APAS will consider and respond to all questions and complaints, and will respond within a reasonable time in writing. If our response to your complaint does not address your concerns to your satisfaction, you may have the right to make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), whose website is located at www.oaic.gov.au.
